Leo is a sweet pooch that almost met his end in a high kill shelter. Thankfully, a volunteer-based rescue group from Iowa named Dogs Forever came in and took him under their care. What they didn’t realize is that the dog would be one of their longest-staying residents. But luck changed for Leo when a guy brokenhearted, adopts Leo which has spent 900 days in a dog shelter.
900 days in a dog shelter
The staff at their shelter facility adored the gentle pooch. But sometimes, Leo could be a bit difficult. He can become hyperactive and confrontational with other animals. This meant that he needed a home that has a fenced-in yard where he could exercise, and there should not be any other pets or small kids.
Because of his special needs, potential adopters tended to shy away from him. His stay at the shelter kept on extending, but the staff was still optimistic that there is a family out there that would be perfect for him.
They kept on posting pictures and videos of the unwanted dog on their website and Facebook page. They hoped that by featuring him often, the dog would get the opportunity to be seen by his future forever family.
After 900 days, that moment finally came.
Perfect companionship
David Evens has just broken up with his partner and was looking for companionship. He decided to get a dog and went online. The lonely man saw Leo’s picture on the rescue group’s website and felt a connection with him. So he decided to visit the shelter and see if he was still available.
Once he was there, the staff explained Leo’s special needs to David. It didn’t fluster him. He was determined to adopt the dog. He agreed to put up a fence in his yard and even attended a three-month-long training program so that he could get better acquainted with the adorable pooch.
When David was finally able to take the dog home, everybody was happy. The gentle pooch finally got his forever home and David was able to fill the empty void in his life.
