Dog’s Memory Is Honored by People Leaving Sticks At His Gravestone
More than a century ago Rex reached doggie heaven. Even so, the dog’s memory is honored in the lives and hearts of people who pass by his gravestone in Greenwood Cemetery. Buried next to his owner John E. Stow, Rex grave takes pride of place. As a New York City fruit merchant John passed away in 1884.
Bronze Statue Commissioned
Uniquely, and as a loving gesture beside his grave, John had commissioned Rex’s bronze statue to be built. Presumably, it was a way of cherishing their moments together.
Incredibly it’s heartwarming to know that an owner could go to such lengths to honor the memory of his best friend.
Grave Highlights How Much Our Pets Matter To Us
As well. the thought of the pup being with his owner even in death will definitely strike a chord among animal lovers. It highlights how much our pets matter to us. Viewing the grave site, we can definitely feel the connection John and Rex had in their lives.
Owner and pet must have been the best of friends and shared a deep love for each other. It is a feeling all pet owners are acquainted with.
Honoring The Dog With Sticks
Because of this, passersby leave sticks at the pup’s grave. It is a way to mark in honor of the relationship the two had ,and probably continue to have in heaven.
By the same token, up in heaven Rex is probably smiling, knowing that people take the time to cherish the memories he had with his owner. Similarly, I’m sure all dog lovers can relate to the familiar experience of cherished memories of their dog.
Although some people leave sticks, one photo shows a rose being left at the pup’s statue. Sticks or not, we can all agree that Rex must have been a good boy to deserve all these treats even in death.
Kind Gestures From Dog Lovers
Hopefully, John can smile from above, knowing that people still look after Rex’s statue and continue to honor their memory with these kind gestures. Clearly, these sticks represent the values that run through pet owners.
